Aristotle’s view on “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles Aristotle’s favorite tragedy was Oedipus the King by Sophocles. The play begins with the Laius and Jocasta, the king and queen of Thebes. Upon the birth of their son, Oedipus, an oracle proclaims that he will kill his father and marry his mother.
Oedipus tried to evade this prophecy, but he failed. Oedipus eventually killed his biological father, Laius, and married his own mother, Jocasta (Sophocles). As with what happened to King Laius, the attempt to defy destiny began a ripple effect not only in the life of Oedipus but also to the people surrounding him.
Jocasta did not do a good deed turning her into a hero. She goes through many tragedies, but this only categorizes her as a victim of tragedy. While Oedipus is still the “tragic hero,” he is no longer the main victim in the play.
